Senior Mechanical Engineer

Position Summary:

Working out of our Marlborough, MA office, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will work with members of a multi-disciplinary product development team to create, design, implement, test and deliver innovative instrumentation technology and automation solutions for characterizing aerosol and spray drug products.  Our technology platform combines motion control, opto-mechanical hardware, sensors, electronic PCBs, software and firmware into standard setting instruments used by regulatory authorities, pharmaceutical companies, contract laboratories and other organizations around the world.

Proveris is looking for a creative and experienced individual to join our Product Development team and make real contributions on many levels.  An ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, high engineering acumen, proven experience building complex products, and ability to think from big picture design architecture down to details of troubleshooting electro-mechanical subsystems and anything in between to get the job done.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be a strong team player and work closely with colleagues from product development team, product management, marketing, manufacturing and technical support to define requirements and specifications, manage project scopes, and to deliver relevant work products, enhancements, and utilities for customer success.
  • Responsible for mechanical systems architecture (for modular systems) and provides technical expertise in mechanical and electromechanical design
  • Mentor junior/associate engineers.
  • Lead and/or provide guidance and technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams in a growing, dynamic environment.
  • Conduct research in structural, thermal, or dynamics modeling of mechanical systems.
  • Produce advanced conceptual and detail designs for complex system mechanics/hardware.
  • Projects may include multiple disciplines that include identification and evaluation of concepts for fluid flow, heat transfer, mechanics, vacuum systems, and controls. Includes optimizing designs for manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs).
  • Organize, participate and lead design reviews.
  • Conduct feasibility studies – including generation of well documented test plans.
  • Manage new product development BOMs and provide Engineering interface for Manufacturing operations.
  • Develop and define best design practices for development and testing including the use of simulation modeling, functional testing etc.
  • Assist in managing projects and provide technical oversight for both internal and external resources.
  • Coordinate the design, construction and implementation of test fixtures for production as required.
  • Act as vendor technical liaison to support the company’s relationships with technology suppliers as required.


  • Electro-mechanical design expertise in motion control utilizing servo/stepper motors, actuators, drive trains, bearings, belts, pulleys, linear slides and implementing thermal management concepts.
  • CAD Skills – Solidworks advanced surfacing, master model strategy and simulation (finite element analysis).
  • Experience with all major production processes including plastic and metal fabrication methods.
  • Outstanding communications skills ranging from diagramming on white boards to writing detailed specifications documents.
  • Proven expertise with first principles analyses and root cause diagnostics at the systems level.
  • Track record of delivering on product development projects from design stage to commercial release.
  • Good balance of theoretical and practical experience and must be “hands on” in a lab environment and have experience using basic equipment.
  • Energetic, positive, problem solving and results-driven personality with excellent time-management, planning, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.


  • Bachelor’s (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering. Advanced technical degree is desirable.
  • Minimum 7+ years’ directly applicable system development experience.
  • Track record of successful product design and release to manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of mechanical design.
  • Significant experience in prototype development and testing, as well as hardware design and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to devise solutions for unique and complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability and flexibility to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.
  • Significant experience in managing, overseeing, and delivering multiple projects on budget and schedule.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and mentor junior team members.
  • Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.
  • Experience working within an internationally recognized quality management system such as ISO9001.

Senior Field Applications Scientist

Position Summary:

Proveris Scientific is looking for a Senior Field Applications Scientist in the Commercialization Department. The candidate will combine real pharmaceutical laboratory experience with the understanding of drug formulation and product development to develop and characterize aerosol and spray delivered drug. The candidate will be responsible for global application support, including assisting customers in analytical method development through education programs, on-site consultation and contract services, performing some internal testing to resolve customer related application issues, and assist with scientific collaborations in the development of new technologies. The candidate will also be responsible for assisting in presales activities especially for Proveris by Design laboratory services. The candidate will also be responsible for executing Proveris by Design laboratory studies at the customer facility. The candidate must balance laboratory activities in the corporate offices with customer support activities, technical presentations and field visits to prospective customers as necessary, involving both domestic and international travel. Work with pharmaceutical scientists on analytical method development validation and support. Assist in the definition, management and delivery of education programs for method development, application problem resolution and regulatory submission requirements. Establish and manage scientific collaboration to support R&D in the development of new technologies. Define and execute laboratory experiments for method development activities, application support, product demonstrations and other consulting services. Develop and deliver scientific and technical presentations on Proveris technology. Collect and compile date from the field on customer needs and product performance and usability. Actively participate with the Product Management Department in product design reviews and pre-release product testing as necessary. Must be willing to travel regularly and internationally up to 50% of the time.



Master’s Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related applied science field, or the foreign equivalent.


Minimum Requirements:

3 years of experience in analytical method development and analysis by HPLC, UV, and other analytical techniques. 2 years of experience in one of the following: industry experience in spray and aerosol characterization techniques; or particle characterization. 1 year of experience in each of the following: analytical method development; analysis on the SprayVIEW Measurement System utilizing a Quality by Design methodology; working with regulatory requirements in the spray and aerosol drug delivery area; and direct laboratory experience in cGMP/GLP environment.
